Alexander J. Noelle

Alexander J. Noelle is a PhD candidate in the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, where he is completing a dissertation entitled “Mythologizing the Individual: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of Giuliano de’ Medici in Art and Literature.” In the first study devoted specifically to this member of the Medici family, Alexander focuses on the evolution of this important figure’s public image that was, at first, fashioned by Giuliano himself and then, after he was assassinated, commandeered by his brother Lorenzo “il Magnifico” and subsequent generations of Medici rulers. Alexander completed a BA in the History of Art and Italian in 2009 at Vassar College and received his MA from the Courtauld Institute in 2014. Pursuing a career in museum work, Alexander has held research and curatorial positions at the Courtauld Gallery and Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, as well as internships at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among others. As a MAP fellow, Alexander will consult the vast number of unpublished documents related to Giuliano’s life as well as his aesthetic and literary legacy
