TRANSLATION:
On New Year’s Day, His Majesty [King Felipe III] with the Princes and all the court attended mass with the Company of Jesus [Jesuits]. The sermon was preached by the Patriarch [Juan de Ribera, Patriarch of Antioch and Viceroy of Valencia] with a great concourse of people. After mass, His Majesty and their Highnesses went to eat overlooking the Market Square, where the canvas barrier had already been set up for the joust which took place after the meal. The knights were splendidly arrayed with fanciful devices but they jousted so badly that no one had ever seen anything worse. Notwithstanding the great number of knights who took the field, only one lance was broken and this was by Don Gaspar Mercader. As a result, no one would have had the patience to stay and watch if there had not been such magnificent costumes, such extravagant presentations and such original devices on which to feast one’s eyes. On the preceding day, there was a renowned evening party in the house of the Marquis of Guadalest [Francisco de Mendoza]. All of the ladies of the city took part and were richly turned-out and His Majesty was present but did not dance, leaving this to the Crown Prince of Savoy [Filippo Emanuele di Savoia], who danced very well. All of the other gentlemen of the court danced with grace, most notably the Prior [Filiberto Emanuele di Savoia, Prior of Castile and Aragon] and also the Duke of Infantado [Juan Hurtado de Mendoza de la Vega y Luna], the Marquis of Zea [Cristóbal Gómez de Sandoval Rojas y de la Cerda] , the Duke of Alba [Antonio Álvarez de Toledo] and the Duke of Medinaceli [Juan de la Cerda y de Aragón]. All those present enjoyed themselves and considered this to be a very fine party. The highlight of the evening was the appearance of a most opulent collation including as many as a hundred plates of sweets. Yesterday, His Majesty went to hunt and fish at Albufera, where he killed a great number of water birds and caught many fish.

TRANSCRIPTION:
Hieri fu Sua M.tà a cacciare et a pescare all'Albuffera dove ammazzò gran copia d'ucelli aquatici et pescò gran quantità di pesci.
