We are very pleased and honored to announce that the Medici Archive Project was just awarded a grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. This award is a start-up grant which will enable MAP to produce a platform for a pilot Italian paleography online course, and to offer the course in the fall of this year.
We are very excited about this opportunity. Paleography is sometimes called a dying art, and very few institutions around the country are able to teach it because it is hard to gather, in any given department, enough students to justify the costs. We are confident that through our online platform, currently being developed by our Technology Director Lorenzo Allori, we will be able to introduce many promising scholars to the art and the science of reading ancient manuscripts. We also believe that with this initiative we will encourage these scholars to develop a passion for archival research.
We are extremely grateful to the Kress Foundation for their recognition and continued support.
