Topic Description: Natural Sciences

"NATURAL SCIENCES" is a broad category that reflects the period concept of "Natural Philosophy". In addition to modern or proto-modern empirical science, it includes: alchemy and advanced technology; astrology and astronomy; the collecting of natural curiosities (often cross-indexed with "EXOTIC ANIMALS".)

References to the theory and practice of medicine (including anatomy and pharmacology) are indexed primarily under "MEDICINE" but are sometimes cross-indexed under "NATURAL SCIENCES", especially when they include information regarding the broader scientific or intellectual context. References to advanced animal husbandry and plant culture are included under "NATURAL SCIENCES".

Many references to botanical matters are cross-indexed under "GARDENS" and the gathering of geological samples under "PIETRE DURE".

Scientists or natural philosophers are indexed by name under "PEOPLE" (for example: Galileo Galilei; Andreas Vesalius; Leonardo da Vinci.) References to unnamed or otherwise obscure natural scientists are generally indexed under "NATURAL SCIENCES", even when they appear in contexts not directly relevant to this activity ("Abbiamo regalato due scudi al ragazzo che ci ha aiutato con le esperienze.") il liutaio fiammingo sta molto male di salute.")

Scientific organizations are often accessible by "PLACE" (for example: Accademia Cimento-- Firenze-- Firenze-- Toscana-- Italia-- Europe-- World.)
