Topic Description: Medicine

"MEDICINE" encompasses all references to medical theory and practice in the period context including: anatomy (human and veterinary); dentistry; pharmacology; popular and scholarly beliefs regarding health; surgical instruments; plague prevention and treatment.

Botanical information relevant to pharmacology is often cross-indexed as "GARDENS". References to "MEDICINE" are cross-indexed under "NATURAL SCIENCES" when they include information regarding the broader scientific or intellectual context.

Medical practitioners are indexed by name. References to unnamed or otherwise obscure medical practitioners ("Salomone medico") are generally indexed under "MEDICINE", even when they appear in contexts not directly relevant to this activity ("fate la solita mercede al chirurgo.")
