Topic Description: Furniture

"FURNITURE" includes references to sacred and domestic furniture, whether movable or fixed, usually in wood but also in marble, bronze and other materials. The Project's goal is to be as inclusive as possible in order to support narrowed searches by "PERSON", "PLACE", "DATE RANGE" and "WORD SEARCH". However, the emphasis is on substantial items of functional or parade furniture rather than small ornamental pieces (i.e. "studioli" and "stipi" rather than little inlaid boxes) unless there is technical or contextual information relevant to furniture making or furniture use.

Particular attention is given to technical and descriptive terminology (especially furniture types: "sgabello", "lettuccio", "cassone", etc.) Textile furnishings and leather wall-coverings are generally indexed only under "TAPESTRIES AND HANGINGS".

Furniture-makers of all kinds who are identifiable by name are indexed as "ARTISTS". References to unnamed or otherwise obscure furniture makers ("Guglielmo ebanista") are generally indexed under "FURNITURE", even when they appear in contexts not directly relevant to this activity ("abbiamo donato cinquanta scudi allo stipettaio.")
