Topic Description: Drawings

"DRAWINGS" encompasses all references to the production, use and collection of drawings in all techniques, including: pen and ink, wash, metal point, charcoal, etc. (whether working drawings, academic studies, presentation drawings, architectural drawings or drawings intended as independent works of art.)

The Project's goal is to be as inclusive as possible in order to support narrowed searches by "PERSON", "PLACE", "DATE RANGE" and "WORD SEARCH". Unspecific references are indexed when they seem to imply a work of drawing (for example, "il progetto", "lo schema","la pianta".)

References to portraits in unspecified media are generally indexed as both "PAINTING" and "DRAWINGS" (unless another media seems to be implied.) Painted works on paper or parchment (especially miniatures) are cross-indexed as "PAINTING". Maps and topographical drawings are cross-indexed as "MAPS AND MAPMAKING".

Tapestry cartoons are cross-indexed as "TAPESTRIES AND HANGINGS". Fresco cartoons are cross-indexed as "PAINTING".
