Topic Description: Archives

"ARCHIVES"
The best source of information regarding the history and development of the Medici Granducal Archive is the Medici Granducal Archive itself. Therefore, this topic category focuses on the production, organization, conservation and use of documentary material, especially but not exclusively in the context of the Medici court and the Medici administration.

Areas of interest include: the development and management of the Segreteria Vecchia and other archives in Florence and elsewhere; secretarial and administrative practices that shaped the structure and content of these archives; contemporary attitudes regarding the function and importance of archival materials. In the Medici Granducal Archive, there are many specific references to secretarial tasks, document coding and mail delivery; these are indexed under ARCHIVES when they shed light on the structure and content of a particular archive or the related cultural values of a particular place and time.

The MEDICI ARCHIVE PROJECT INC. is registered as a non-profit corporation in New York with Federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
