Topic Description: Antiquities and Antiquarianism

Marco Dente, Laocoon, engraving"ANTIQUITIES AND ANTIQUARIANISM" subsumes the wide range of activities inherent in the period concept of "antiquarianism", including: the excavation, sale and collecting of (usually classical) artifacts; the study of classical art, literature, history and philology; antiquarian publications and the correspondence of "antiquari" throughout Europe. In contemporary parlance, the term "antiquario" could be used to indicate both a humble antique dealer and a grand scholar with high patronage (for example, Gian Pietro Bellori.

A less frequent designation was "antiquario moderno", indicating a scholar of post-classical (i.e. Christian) antiquity, especially of the high middle ages.

Antique coins and medals are cross-referenced under "COINS AND MEDALS", antique sculptures under "SCULPTURE", antique ceramics under "CERAMICS", etc. References to the collecting of antiquities are often cross-indexed under "ART COLLECTING".
