Topic Description: Academies

"ACADEMIES" indexes occurrences of the term "accademia" (in its various language forms).

The term "accademia" was used to designate a wide variety of formal and informal organizations, ranging from official bodies (like the Florentine "Accademia del Disegno" and "Accademia della Crusca") to simple gatherings of people with shared interests ("stasera si fa l'accademia dei poeti in palazzo").

"Accademie" were frequently meetings of artists and/or amateurs to draw from the nude. Therefore, the term "fare l'accademia" often meant "to draw from the nude" and the noun "un'accademia" could indicate "a drawing from the nude".

Duly constituted Academies with formal corporate identities are also indexed under "PLACES" according to the name of the academy.
