Marta Caroscio studied at the Universities of Florence, London and Siena. She completed her PhD in Medieval Archaeology at the University of Siena in 2007, receiving as well a Diploma in Paelography, Diplomatics and Archive Studies from the Archivio di Stato in Florence (2003-2005). As Fellow in Museum Studies at the Museo Nacional de la Cerámica “González Martí” (Valencia, 2008-2010) she gained relevant skills in this field, being granted further Fellowships by the Fundación Bancaja (Museo Arqueológico de Sagunto) and the Institute de Estudio Ceutíes (Museo de Ceuta). In 2011-2012 Dr. Caroscio returned to Florence as Fellow in History at the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies (Villa I Tatti, Florence). Her main topic of interest is the material culture of the Latin, Muslim and Jewish Mediterranean in the Late Middle Ages and the early Modern period with special reference to the transmission of know-how in pottery and glass making. Being both an archaeologist and an historian by training, her research is deeply interdisciplinary, drawing together archival documents, systematic work on archaeological findings and the study of iconographic sources. Further research interests include food history and the early global trade. Her current research focuses on the role of Jewish merchants as middlemen in the relationships between Florence and the Ottoman empire.
